Summary

As Technical Director on Kikaninchen, the official app of KiKA — Germany’s public broadcasting channel for children by ARD and ZDF — my involvement began before a single line of code was written. I led the initial pitch and successfully guided the project through the competitive tendering process, laying the foundation for a long-term client relationship. Once the project was won, I was responsible for the full technical architecture and a deliberate modular design approach, which was critical for an app of this scope and longevity. The modular structure allowed the product to grow organically over the years — spanning games, mini-games, multisensory interactions (touch, microphone, motion), video streaming with offline download, personalized user profiles, and a child-safe parental control system — without requiring a fundamental rearchitecting of the codebase. Beyond the initial launch, I continued to lead the technical development and ongoing support across multiple years of updates, navigating iOS version changes, performance optimizations, and the continuous expansion of features and content. The app has accumulated over 425 ratings on the App Store and remains actively maintained to this day, a testament to the durability of the architectural decisions made at the outset.
